We’ve all heard the saying “You can’t judge a book by it’s cover” and it’s a rather nice, though slightly naïve. The reality is whether it’s actual book covers, people, food, anything really, our first look at it does shape our initial impressions. To this end, finding someone to help with a literal book cover can be difficult. My first set of short stories were published with a rather sub-par book cover. Neither myself, nor Ben are graphic artists, the result showed.
While a bad cover doesn’t mean death for a book, it can have an impact. It was hard for me as an author to proudly talk about the book. It didn’t look professional, real, or any of the things that made me excited about it. My own lack of enthusiasm had a negative impact on my ability to market the book.
As writers it’s really easy to forget about the non writing things we need to do. Getting a good cover is one of those things. Take your time, find a good artist, and make sure you give yourself a cover to be proud of. Whether it’s doing it yourself, finding a friend to hire, or just searching for someone, you should make sure a good cover is part of the process.
Maybe we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but the reality is we do… so why not make sure yours is a good one.
