I have been rather lazy about losing weight and getting healthier. I keep saying I want to and then only put in about half the effort it would take for anything to happen. This needs to stop. I need to step up and do what I have to do instead of being so “blah” about it. I am old enough to know better.
I hope that maybe sharing my experience will help to keep me motivated. To that end, I will be doing a food journal every Friday. I hope to use this to keep me on track, and also help to improve my habits. I also want to intro it each week with my thoughts on how the experience is going, what I could change, what’s going well, what’s the most challenging.
I don’t have a specific weight loss goal. I know I want to lose a large amount of weight (like nearly 100 pounds or more), but I also have the main goal of simply being healthier. If at the end of this I still weigh what some would consider “a lot” but I feel better, and look the way I want, I will consider it a success. I also don’t plan on “dieting”. I have thoughts about diets and believe that while they can work they also create a dependence on them, I’ve also fallen off diets before. Instead, my way of doing this will be eating smaller portions, eating healthier foods, and being more active. Cutting out or at least cutting back on the things I indulge in that are bad for me, making sure to get a good variety in my diet, and trying to eat more fresh food and less processed food. I likely won’t be counting calories with this journal. It may come to that, for now, I am just going to focus on what I am eating and being aware of portion control. I know that you need to burn more calories than you take in, but I also know with basic changes in my habits that will happen naturally.
I am sure some of you won’t want to read this part of this blog, and that I understand. I would simply say the same thing that I do on political posts, don’t hit the “continue reading” button and just wait for posts that interest you to come up. Unlike my political posts this journal will be featured more heavily on my blog, and so I do understand that will suck a bit.
As always I welcome and look forward to comments. If you have advice or want to share recipes or workouts.
I will end this with two disclaimers. 1: I am not a nutritionist or doctor. I don’t know that my approach will work or if it’s the best way. For all, I know three months in I might not even lose a pound. I am approaching this as myself and simply trying. If you need advice from a professional I always encourage you to seek it out, no matter the subject. 2: This is not a call to action for anybody else. I am unhappy with my body and my health for me. I am making a choice to fix that for myself. Every person needs to do what is best for them, and I would never presume to know what that is. I want to make this clear from the start. This is for me.
Breakfast: Egg, half avocado, half tortilla, milk, tea
Lunch: Baked potato
Dinner: Salad with chicken, ice tea
Snacks: Banana, ice tea
Indulgences: Redbull, next to drinking alcohol this is one of my worst things. Sunflower seeds… I sometimes turn into Mulder
Work Out: None, but I did do a fair amount of yard work
Weigh In: 229… not great but honestly better than I expected. I just got back from a trip where I did a lot of eating and drinking, and then was fairly lazy after returning so I had expected my weight to be up
Lunch: Homemade nachos and RedBull
I had a very bad morning/afternoon. It was off to a bad start for eating healthy this week. I have vented about it, and I am just going to move on.
Dinner: Chicken, rice, asparagus
Indulgences: Sunflower seeds
Breakfast: Smoothie with fruit and Greek yogurt, tea
Lunch: Half a wrap, some chips, milk
Dinner: Bean burrito, ice tea
Indulgences: Tortilla chips, popcorn. Yes, I know so many unhealthy things…
Breakfast: Scrambled Eggs with cheese and green onion, half a fruit smoothie
Dinner: Baked potato
Snacks: Hummus and crackers, ice tea
Indulgences: A few tortilla chips because I couldn’t help it with the hummus… and I do mean a few, piece of dark chocolate
Workout: 6.3 miles on an exercise bike. I know that exercise bikes are like nothing, but it’s been so long since I’ve been to the gym on a regular basis so I am easing myself back in. Even going is a big deal for me right now so I’m going to take it.
Breakfast: Breakfast burrito and Sierra Mist… yes I know awful morning but I couldn’t help it. The cravings were real
Lunch: None, breakfast was so late
Dinner: Sesame ginger salad, cherry limeade (so bad)
Snacks: Crackers and cheese
Indulgences: Redbull and whiskey and coke
Workout: None woke up way late.
I note “ice tea” vs just tea because I actually put a little sugar in my ice tea. Hot tea I just drink straight. I try to make the amount of sugar I put in ice tea super limited.
So I need to work on portion control, my salt intake, and my snacking. I also lost it a lot on Friday. This is going to be a work in progress and take time, however, and all I can do is acknowledge the steps I am taking and do better each week.
